The City of Rainsville is located in central DeKalb County in Northeast Alabama on top of Sand Mountain and is nicknamed the "Crossroads of Sand Mountian", in part due to the two major local, regional, and nationally significant trade, commerce, power/energy, defense, and tourism corridors of AL Hwy 35 and 75 intersecting through the center of the Community and its linking connectivity and proximity to many other major cities in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.

The Rainsville Police Department is a full-time department of the City of Rainsville municipal government and is responsible for serving and protecting the approximately 20 land area miles in the Community. When fully staffed, the department consists of 14 sworn officers- 12 full-time, 2 part-time - and 10-reserve officers, 4 full-time and 2 part-time dispatchers. Department operations are under the command of the Chief of Police.

The Department provides all police services for the approximately 5,015 full time residents of the City of Rainsville, as well as the countless numbers of daily visitors, industry /trade and business people,  and shoppers. They also help support, as needed and requested, other surrounding cities, towns and communities that comprise over 71,000 population throughout the County. The police department is also a designated site for participants to go for the statewide "Yellow Dot" program and is very active in organizing and sponsoring local community acivities, such as the Annual Youth Day(Badges Unite for Kids) at Rainsville City Park.

The City of Rainsville is home to several major corporations and organizations, including, but not limited too: RTI (Honda Parts Supplier), Mayfield Dairy Farms, Sola Hevi-Duty, Paragon, Rainsviile Church Pew, Sand Mountain Electric Co-op, Farmerstel Co-op, and the Section -Dutton Water Board. It is also home to the DeKalb County Board of Education, the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum, the DeKalb County Farmers Co-op, the North Alabama Agri-Business Center, and the Rainsville WWTP (which provides services to Rainsville, Sylvania, Fyffe, and Powell). Educational institutions include Northeast Alabama Community College, the DeKalb County Board of Education administrative offices and County Technology Annex Center, Cornerstone Christian Academy, and the "Home of the Plainview Bears", and Plainview K-12 School System.
